Large Dark Olive Dun Parachute
The Large Dark Olive (Baetis rhodani) is one of the most common of the Ephemeroptera species found in the UK mainly in the early spring and later in late autumn. The nymphs of the LDO live usually in riffle areas of rivers and streams.
It is during daylight and at dusk when emergence of the adults occurs. In the early months of the spring, LDO is probably the most important of all aquatic insects. Duns swim up to the surface in open water and it takes a few moments for their wings to unfold to the point where they are able to fly, this being the perfect moment for a trout recovering from the stress of the spawning to catch a vulnerable fly.
